Remembering through AI’s Eye: using generative AI to revive past memories

As we age, memories can often feel like the only tangible link to our past, making reminiscence a critical part of our lives. This is particularly true for those in dementia care, where memories become even more precious. Recent studies are witnessing a growing trend in reminiscence therapy interventions, designed to stimulate cognitive function and improve the quality of life for those living with dementia. The touchstone of these therapies is personalization – crafting an experience that is tailored to the individual’s history and personal experiences.

Introducing Our Intervention

Understanding these needs, we developed an innovative intervention to aid dementia care by leveraging Generative AI models, specifically GPT-4 and Dall-E 2. The aim is to convert individual’s memory descriptions into visually appealing photo albums. Here’s how it works: People narrate their memories, which are then fed into our intervention, resulting in the creation of a personalized photo album for that memory. This album also aims to initiate conversations and share stories, thereby enriching the experience and connection with loved ones.

Understanding the Methodology

Our approach is highly systematic, making use of an iterative prompting technique and creating a simulated dialogue environment for AI models. Here is a step-by-step guide into our methodology:

1. Extracting Memory Highlights: Raw textual memory is processed to yield a structured memory outline, including key details such as time, location, and pivotal events.

2. Role Play Prompting Process: This involves our technique that we are calling it “Role and Rules”, where GPT-4 is cast in the role of a photographer. It is instructed to take pictures based on the outlined descriptions, guided by a set of rules for preferred styles and prohibited content.

3. Transforming Textual Prompts to Images: The act of taking a picture is translated as spawn prompts for image creation given in the format “[SUBJECT] in the style of [STYLE]”. GPT-4 is inspired by the given structured memory and rules to generate image prompts that abide by the “[SUBJECT] in the style of [STYLE]” format. This outputs a list of prompts that serve as a base for the desired photo album.

4. Actualizing Images using Dall-E 2: With a comprehensive list of generated image prompts to hand, Dall-E 2 is next in line. It takes the prompt and translates it into actual images, resulting in a visually rich photo album.

Our intervention reflects a pivotal step forward, integrating contemporary AI tools directly into the design process. This has significant implications on future developments, as employing such AI tools in design could profoundly shape the creation of interventions and digital products.

Autobiography is a testament to this potential, leveraging AI technologies for a noble cause, to bring comfort and joy to people with dementia and their caregivers. These AI tools don’t just serve as part of the product, they are key to its creation and functionality, and they underscore how transformative these tools can be in the right setting.

In essence, AI is our paintbrush; through it, we can craft custom experiences enhanced by the power of personalization. As we continue navigating the digital age, we anticipate seeing AI tools like GPT-4 and Dall-E 2 become integral to the creation of cutting-edge solutions. Indeed, the future of product and intervention design may be deeply interlinked with the evolution of AI. The prospect is exciting—we are eager to further explore this frontier and see how far we can expand the boundaries of innovation.
