Debt Leap emerged from the GamePop game jam in Canada, a 48-hour solo endeavor under the theme “Let’s Go Gambling.” This 3D platformer drops players into a two-minute level as a kid hustling to collect coins for his slick, poker-obsessed dad—who’s too broke to pay the bills. The project leans hard into dynamic camera work and a lighthearted narrative, blending a gambling-inspired story with tight platforming. It’s a short, quirky adventure that came together with some creative tech twists.

Key Highlights
Camera Blocking
I mixed things up with cameras. The game blends a third-person orbital cam for smooth movement with stationary Resident Evil-style shots for some cinematic drama. It’s a cool way to frame the action and keep things interesting.
Level Design
Built the level from scratch in Unity 6 with ProBuilder. It was buggy—crashed a bunch—but I got a solid layout working. Designed it to play nice with the camera setup, guiding the player through jumps and coin grabs.
Interaction System
Added a simple event-driven interaction system. It uses two distance checks and trigger colliders to detect zones in the scene. Think quick little moments—like grabbing coins or hitting a switch—that fire off smoothly as you move.
Animation Systems
The main character’s animations run on four layers with different masks. I split them up to handle stuff like walking, jumping, and idle poses separately. Keeps the stick-figure kid lively, even with a basic white model.
